A fortnight ago, my 9 month old PC started going ‘wrong’, failing to load properly, crashing intermittently, telling me my hard drive was ‘not accessible’ etc.. I am sufficiently knowledge able to be really dangerous when things do go wrong so, after getting to the final stage – your hard drive is not there (What – ???!!! – Agh!) – I called Profega from their advert in our Kennington Chronicle. The following day, Ged came in and within an hour had the computer back into working order – I hadn’t demolished it after all. Better still, he fixed the WiFi (who would have thought the VM Super Hub needed MORE passwords?) and then got my new smartphone to link properly, saving my limited 500MB/month allowance some 90% of 3G access time when downloading and installing various apps. I decided to replace my computer equipment and booked an initial appointment with Gerard, whose contact details I had found in the Cumnor Parish News. Gerard asked me what I used my old computer for and what improvements I was expecting from its replacement. The questions Gerard asked helped me to get clear in my mind exactly what I needed. He followed our discussion up with an email containing links to various products. This was very helpful and allowed me to explore the options.
When I had provisionally decided what to buy, Gerard and I met at PC World where we looked at various computers which met my requirements to ensure that I was happy with my choice.
Having made my purchases, Gerard and I went to my home where he set everything up whilst patiently fielding my numerous questions. Although I had been feeling a bit apprehensive about having new equipment and software, by the time it was all set up I felt confident that I would soon become accustomed to the changes.
In the past I have found IT experts to rather intimidating, using a lot of jargon and assuming they know what’s best for the customer. Gerard is not at all like this. He put me at my ease as soon as we met because his questions about my computing needs were expressed in terms I could understand. After I bought my laptop I realised I should need some instruction. I went to the City Library for some information, and was given one of Gerard’s leaflets. I rang him up, and we arranged for some home tuition. Gerard proved to be a kind, patient, and very encouraging tutor. I have enjoyed my lessons, which have given me a good sound start, and I know that I can call on him to sort out any difficulties I may have in the future. When my internet access disappeared & my IP confirmed that there was no line fault in this area, I suspected a defective router & having met Ged earlier on a callout at a friend’s house, I put in a call to him. He quickly confirmed the router was the culprit, & despite resets & firmware upgrades was unable to rescucitate it. His solution was to loan me a router to enable me to procure one online but later a phone call from him advised that PC World had them in stock at an Amazon price level. What service.
